From the historic central business district known as "Old Towne," to the newer, planned neighborhoods that emphasize pedestrian-friendliness and community closeness, to the shops and restaurants of the Washingtonian Center, Gaithersburg has a lot to offer. Much of the residential areas such as the Lakelands and Kentlands neighborhoods are in the far west, which can pose some challenges to residents commuting to the District. It's a diverse community that provides an affordable alternative to Bethesda, Chevy Chase and Potomac. Downtown Crown, a new neighborhood that lies near the intersection of I-270 and the I-370/ Intercounty Connector, is a bustling community of apartments, condos and townhouses within walking distance of Downtown Crown, which features a Harris Teeter grocery store, restaurants, shops and businesses.
