Rockville

One of Maryland's oldest towns, Rockville is nonetheless a quintessentially 21st-century American suburb: From the busy Rockville Pike with its big box stores to its comfortable homes and quiet cul-de-sacs, Rockville, the second-largest city in Maryland, is a study in contrasts. Rockville somehow manages to be both a fitting setting for F. Scott Fitzgerald's burial site (at Old St. Mary's Church) as well as an attractive magnet for vibrant new immigrant communities. Rockville Town Center, with its broad plaza, cutting-edge library, and pedestrian-friendly shops and restaurants opened in 2007, giving Rockville a much-needed downtown.
